As you may know the City of Eugene is holding a major *free* all-day  
conference at the University of Oregon this fall, 20 October 2006, on  
the topic of "Choice in Mental Health Care as a Human Rights: A  
Vision of Recovery and Success."

BELOW is the text of a forwarded public service announcement from the  
conference planning committee. You will find information below about  
how *you* may submit a workshop proposal by the deadline of 14 August  
2006.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT from City of Eugene planning committee on  
Conference -- "Choice in Mental Health Care as a Human Right."

The City of Eugene Human Rights Commission is sponsoring an all day  
conference titled "Choice in Mental Health Care as a Human Right: A  
Vision of Recovery and Success" at the University of Oregon on  
October 20, 2006.

This conference is for everyone who cares about both human rights and  
effective mental health care, and who is interested in reforming the  
mental health system to provide more of both!

Keynote speakers for the conference who are nationally recognized  
leaders have already been selected, but proposals are now being  
sought for workshops.

We hope to have workshops presented by consumers and families as well  
as by mental health professionals etc.

BELOW is the text from the poster about the workshop, and the request  
for proposals document.

Choice in Mental Health Care as a Human Right

Conference - Workshop Proposals

Submission Guidelines

The City of Eugene Human Rights Commission and its Mental Health and  
Human Rights Sub-Committee are accepting proposals for workshop  
presentations for the conference. Acceptable workshops may address  
any topic related to the intersection of mental health and human  
rights. Workshops will be either 45 minutes or 1 hour in length. (You  
can also propose to do a sequence of 2 or even 3 workshops in order  
to cover topics which require more time.) This conference will  
include 27 workshops altogether.

Suggested themes for workshops include the following:

  a.. Ways to increase the range of humane and safe alternatives for  
mental health care in order to insure human rights.

  b.. Reducing stigma and discrimination for mental health care  
consumer/survivors.

  c.. Training needs for mental health professionals in order to  
raise awareness about how to insure mental health consumer choice.

  d.. The mental health system from a consumer's perspective.

  e.. Community responsibility for mental health support.

  f.. Specific alternatives to psychotropic medications for mental  
health consumers.

  g.. Eliminating retraumatization by the mental health system:  
creating trauma sensitive services

  h.. The political and social construction of mental health issues.

  i.. Personal and family empowerment for mental health consumers.

  j.. Police, jails, and mental health issues.

All proposals must adhere to the following guidelines:

  1.. Please submit an overview/synopsis of the workshop, of about 50  
words.

  2.. You can also submit a page giving additional information about  
the workshop, to supplement what is in the overview/synopsis. This  
additional page should be no longer than 300 words.

  3.. Submissions should include a title, along with presenter names,  
licenses held by presenters if any, affiliations of presenters,  
addresses, and contact information.

  4.. Three learning objectives for the workshop should be identified

  5.. A brief bio of each presenter (less than 50 words each)  
including experience as a consumer, if any, and prior experience  
presenting this or other workshops/presentations.

  6.. Please indicate any audio-visual requirements.
