2 Lane County events this Fri. 7/14
re: mental health consumer/psychiatric survivors
For 26 years Bastille Day -- 14 July -- has been used as a day to
protest the psychiatric system, and now July is Mad Pride Month (see
info at bottom).
By coincidence there are two free events that day, this Friday, in
Eugene, related to mental health consumers and psychiatric survivors.
You are invited!
~~~~~~~~~~~
1. LAUREL HILL EMPOWERMENT DISCUSSION
Laurel Hill is a major psychosocial rehabilitation program in Eugene
and it is going through some major changes. Laurel Hill is shutting a
popular drop-in center for mental health consumers, and replacing it
with another type of service. A lot of Laurel Hill participants have
had questions and concerns about the process.
This is also a good opportunity to help build empowerment and self-
determination in Laurel Hill, including a potential "clients council"
so that participants there may have an organized voice.
The Lane County Mental Health Consumer/Survivor Council agreed to
have an open meeting at Laurel Hill on this topic, all are welcome --
especially Laurel Hill clients. The event will be this Fri., 14 July,
at 3 pm at Laurel Hill, 2145 Centennial Plaza. That's all the info we
have on this, for more info contact Laurel Hill.
2. STATE-WIDE VIDEO CONFERENCE
You are welcome to be at a free state-wide video conference earlier
that same day. You may attend in Eugene via a state agency location
on Chad St. (near the Register Guard). There is a possibility of two
carpool slots from downtown Eugene if you contact the MindFreedom
office soon.
MindFreedom helped these state-wide videoconferences get going, and
it's fun to see and communicate with mental health consumers and
psychiatric survivors from more than half a dozen locations all over
the state. This meeting will be especially interesting because Dan
Fisher, director of National Empowerment Center based in
Massachusetts, will be patched in to answer questions about building
a state-wide organized voice for consumer/survivors in Oregon, which
can participate in a new coalition of such groups.
BELOW is the announcement from the State of Oregon about this
videoconference, including the address of the Eugene location, and
the times. Hope to see you there! Please forward. (To get future
announcements on this directly, or with questions or comments about
the videoconference, contact Mike H. at the e-mail address below.)
